The IAFF, International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and representatives from 10 fire departments from across the United States and Canada convened this week in Miami, Florida, for the IAFF/IAFC Fire Service Joint Labor-Management Wellness-Fitness Task Force meeting.
Held at the Miami Dade County Local 1403 union hall, Task Force members reviewed the updated 4th Edition of the Wellness-Fitness Initiative (WFI) to be released this fall. This new edition will address new developments in health screening and behavioral health programming.
The group also provided feedback on the status, challenges and advancements in each department’s health and wellness programs and discussed new research and developments in cardiovascular disease prevention and cancer screening.
In addition to representatives from all 10 Task Force cities and IAFF affiliates (see list below), attendees included senior staff from the IAFF Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Treatment and Recovery, FSTAR, NIOSH, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Illinois Fire Service Institute, NantHealth, Skidmore University, University of Arizona, University of Miami and Johns Hopkins University.
The Task Force was established in 1996 to develop and promote a positive and holistic approach to wellness and fitness programs in the fire service.
Fire departments throughout the United States and Canada have developed model WFI programs. Other locals and fire departments can learn from these successful programs to develop or enhance their own wellness-fitness programs.
